Room 21 Skywatch: planets, stars and space

Our class went to a skywatch lesson. We learned about planets, stars and constellations. We watched a movie called “Earth’s wild ride”.  We all sat in an inflated dome and we learned about how dinosaurs became extinct.  We saw a model of how the ice age was 10,000 years ago.  In those days, people lived in caves and painted pictures on their walls. We saw cave paintings of woolly mammoths.

We also learned about what would happen to our bones and muscles if we lived on the moon for a long time. If we stay on the moon for a long time, gravity here, would be too strong for us to even lift our heads and arms off the ground.

We heard lots of Aboriginal stories about the stars.  We liked the emu story, the sharks and the stingray story, the seven sisters and the hunters and the story about the two spirits.

It felt a bit like a 3D movie when we were on Earth’s wild ride.  Part of the movie showed a part of a volcanic eruption, of Mt Etna in Sicily, Italy.  It was very cool as it was like 3D and being on a ride.

To help us remember the names of the planets, in order from the sun, we learned a sentence:

My Very Elegant Mother Just Served Us New Potatoes.

Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto

Our class really enjoyed the skywatch presentation.
